Whirlpool washer F5 E2 error: what it means and how to fix it
What F5 E2 means
The washer thinks the door is not locking. It will not run until the door is fully closed and latched.
Safety first
Do not reach into the washer if the tub or agitator is moving. If you will do any checks or repairs beyond closing the door, disconnect power first (unplug or disconnect power).
Stop and call for service if:
- The tub/agitator is moving and you can’t safely wait for it to stop (do not reach in).
- You see damaged wiring/connectors at the latch area.
- You are not comfortable removing panels or working around sharp sheet-metal edges.
Common causes
- Door not fully closed/latched (it may look closed but isn’t latched).
- Laundry item caught in the door opening or load too large, preventing the door from latching.
- Door lock/latch assembly is damaged or failing, so it can’t lock the door and triggers F5 E2.
How to fix it
- Open the door and firmly close it. The door must be completely closed for the washer to operate, and it may look closed without actually being latched.
- Check for laundry items sticking out beyond the door opening. Leave enough space for clothes to tumble freely; reduce the load size if needed, then close the door firmly again.
- Reset the control: disconnect the washer from power for 5 minutes (unplug if it’s plugged into an outlet), then restore power and try again.
- If the error returns and you’re comfortable with a repair, replace the door lock/latch assembly using the correct OEM part for your exact model number.
- Power off for service: unplug or disconnect power before starting, then open the door. Do not reach into the appliance if the tub or agitator is moving.
- Remove the top panel: remove the three rear screws, slide the top panel back, and lift it off. Watch for sharp sheet-metal edges.
- Disconnect the door latch electrical connector: from inside the washer, gently pull down on the latch’s bottom connector to unplug it.
- Remove the door latch assembly: support the latch, remove the two T20 Torx screws, then pull the latch up and out.
- Confirm you have the correct replacement using the washer’s model tag/model number.
- Install the new latch: align it with the connector facing down, secure it with the two T20 Torx screws, then reconnect the electrical connector.
- Reinstall the top panel: set it onto the retainers, slide it forward, and reinstall the three rear screws.
When to call a technician
- If F5 E2 keeps coming back after firmly closing the door, checking for items caught in the opening, and doing the 5-minute power reset.
- If you find damaged wiring/connectors, or the latch replacement steps feel outside your comfort level.
- If you cannot safely remove panels or work around sharp sheet-metal edges.
